University of Michigan-Flint

Vicky Dawson - English Language and Literature (MA)

I came to UM-Flint as an undergraduate with only the barest idea of the road ahead. I wanted a job, and I wanted the chance to prove that I could be successful at a university like UM-Flint. However, upon entering the University Center eight years ago, I almost turned around and went home. As a 27 year old housewife and mother, I couldn’t stop thinking “What am I doing here?”

Today, the answer is easy. I’m here for the journey. That journey began when UM-Flint faculty, staff and fellow students challenged me to think beyond myself and my limited idea of a “job.” My classes, activities and interactions with the UM-Flint community have allowed me to explore many paths, and I realized that I have a responsibility to continue learning and challenging myself and my contributions to others.

I did find a job after graduation, one in which I give back daily, but my education at UM-Flint isn’t finished. I’m pursuing my graduate degree in English because I discovered that through writing the voice could find expression and freedom. Someday I hope to be a writing professor and mentor like those I’ve found here. The UM-Flint community and my professors have mentored me and supported me in each decision I’ve made. I have valued friends here at UM-Flint, and I’m excited to continue my journey with them.
