Hagerman Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation
Established in fall of 2015, by Phil and Jocelyn Hagerman, The Hagerman Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (HCEI) is the heart of entrepreneurship within the School of Management and on the University of Michigan-Flint campus. The Center offers students opportunities to enrich their education with experiences that take them beyond the classroom. The Center activities will facilitate entrepreneurial and innovative skills to help graduates thrive and be successful.
The Hagerman Foundation presented the School of Management with a $2 million gift to establish the Hagerman Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. This gift, the largest to date for the School of Management, is being used to support student scholarships, a summer program for high school students, faculty teaching, research efforts, award money for the annual business plan competition, as well as partial funding for the student Entrepreneurs Society. The gift also inspired a new major offered by the School of Management: Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management.

The goal of the Hagerman Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is to increase the University of Michigan-Flint community members' general interest in and awareness of the possibility of starting companies. This will primarily be accomplished through entrepreneurial workshops, networking, programs, and events.
Within the above framework, the Hagerman Center will emphasize the following:
1. Serving Flint
2. UM-Flint student participation in center activities, including assisting in the management of the center
3. Partnerships with others in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, including key stakeholders such as Univeristy of Michigan-Flint organizations, University of Michigan-Flint faculty and alumni, and the business community
4. Connecting potential entrepreneurs and practicing entrepreneurs with the most appropriate resources
5. Applying the best practices in organizational management
Phil and Jocelyn Hagerman
Phil Hagerman is CEO and chairman of Diplomat Pharmacy, president of The Hagerman Foundation, and co-owner of SkyPoint Ventures. He serves as chief executive officer for Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy. He began, alongside his father, Dale Hagerman at Diplomat. Phil Hagerman always wanted to work with his father and believes he is blessed by being able to do so. His motivation in life comes from wanting to make a difference. “If you have passion and belief, you can make a lot of things happen and move a lot of mountains,” he said. Phil and Jocelyn Hagerman have been married for 14 years and have three children.
Phil and Jocelyn Hagerman made a $2 million donation to the University of Michigan-Flint's School of Management on Friday, Jan. 16th, 2015.
Mark Simon, Ph.D.
Mark Simon, Hagerman-endowed professor of entrepreneurship and innovation, received both his Ph.D. in management and his MS in strategic management from Georgia State University. His area of specialization for both degrees was entrepreneurship. He earned his BS in business with an entrepreneurship concentration from Babson College. His research broadly focuses on entrepreneurial decision making, risk taking and new venture formation and has appeared in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice, Business Horizons, Group and Organizational Management and Journal of Business Venturing. Simon has received multiple awards for his teaching, service and research, including Michigan’s 2014 Distinguished Professor Award. He is currently a member of the editorial review board of Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice.
Brian Blume, Ph.D.
Interim Associate Director
Brian D. Blume joined the faculty of the School of Management in 2006. He obtained an MBA degree from Bradley University and his Ph.D. from Indiana University. He has experience as a manager in the healthcare industry.
As Center Director, Prof. Blume is promoting entrepreneurship and innovation within the School of Management. He is actively involved in planning and coordinating the business plan competition and Summer Entrepreneurship Institute.
Prof. Blume teaches courses on 'Human Behavior in Organizations' and 'Entrepreneurship & New Venture Creation'. In the entrepreneurship course, he uses a case-based approach and students evaluate the feasibility of potential business opportunities.
His research focuses on the transfer of training, forced distribution performance management systems, organizational citizenship behaviors, and characteristics of entrepreneurs that are associated with successful new ventures. He has published his research in journals such as the Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Business & Psychology, Journal of Occupational & Organizational Psychology, and the Journal of Business Venturing.
