Seizing Opportunities

Kimberly Nguyen '19 | Psychology

Embracing challenges as opportunities to be seized, Chicago native Kimberly Nguyen is the embodiment of the UM-Flint experience.

As a first-generation college student of Vietnamese parents, Kimberly appreciated the value UM-Flint places on all aspects of learning and growth: academic, social, and professional.

She conducted research at Hurley Medical Center and with education faculty member Dr. Toko Oshio. She participated in Psychology Club, Psi-Chi, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. But it was as peer educator in UM-Flint's Center for Gender and Sexuality where Kimberly could apply all her learning.

"I am utilizing the power of education and leadership to bring awareness to my peers about vital issues," she said.

These experiences gave Kimberly the know-how and confidence to take the next step toward her dream: becoming a clinical psychologist focused on underserved communities. She begins the doctor of psychology program this fall at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
