Mathematics: Tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level
Job expectations include: Teaching mathematics courses to mathematics majors and minors as well as more general audiences; continued scholarly research; service to the Department, University, community, and profession.
Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a Doctorate in Mathematics Education with Master’s degree or equivalent in Mathematics; commitment to excellence in teaching; commitment to scholarly activity and professional growth.Other specific Departmental qualifications are:
• Ability and interest in teaching mathematics to undergraduate students.
• Ability to teach using a variety of formats.
• Ability to supervise projects, and possibly research, with undergraduate students.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with students and colleagues.
• Ability to maintain a program of recognized scholarship.
The University of Michigan-Flint is a comprehensive regional campus of the University of Michigan located in the city of Flint, population approximately 115,000, in Genesee County, population approximately 436,000, with proximity to Ann Arbor, Lansing and Detroit. The city has a cultural center which includes music and art institutes, a science museum, a planetarium and a theater which hosts the city symphony and other events. There are several shopping areas and many restaurants and entertainment venues.
The University has an enrollment of approximately 7250 undergraduate and graduate students. The University opened as an undergraduate commuter school, but several graduate programs are now also offered, and the first residence hall opened this year.
The Mathematics Department (www.umflint.edu/math) is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, which emphasizes excellence in teaching and professional development. The Department is housed in the William Murchie Science Building, with modern facilities for both teaching and research activities. The Department offers courses for mathematics majors and minors, as well as a number of service courses for students of other departments. The standard teaching load is 18 credits per year, with classes generally ranging from 15 to 40 students.
We have a growing Actuarial Mathematics program, a General Bachelor of Arts program in Mathematics, a General Bachelor of Science program with options in pure and applied mathematics, Teacher’s Certificate programs (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science), an Honors program, and general mathematics and teacher’s certificate minors. About a dozen students graduate from our programs each year; some have gone on to graduate from leading graduate and professional schools in the country and others also have been very successful in finding employment and in pursuing lucrative careers.
