Preparing Your Travels

Here are some practical tips to remember as you prepare your travels.

  1. Pack clothes appropriate for the Michigan climate, that is, clothes for hot and cold weather. You will need both.
  2. Prepare and bring important documentation, including:
    • Valid passport
    • Valid travel visa
    • UM-Flint admission letter
    • I-20 or DS-2019
    • I-94 (students with F-1 visa)
    • Proof of financial support 
    • UM-Flint admission letter
    • Other important personal documents/important contact numbers
    • Valid driver’s license and certified English translation (if you plan to drive in the United States)
    • Airport pick-up information
    • Medical records including record of immunizations (in English)
  3. You may bring large sums of money with you when entering the United States. Money exceeding $10,000 (US dollars) must be declared in advance. For more information, refer to the US Customs and Border Protection Agency website.
  4. Review and understand airport policies and procedures
  5. Understand the US-VISIT is a “check-in/check-out system”. It collects biographic information and biometric identifiers on all foreign nationals entering the United States. For more information, refer to the US-VISIT pdf.
