Admissions Checklist

For Undergraduate Students (seeking a Bachelors Degree):

Contact the International Counselor in the Office of Admissions to express your interest in applying, or with questions regarding the application process.

Choose the academic program for which you wish to apply. You may want to visit the University Catalog for specific program degree requirements and detailed course information.

Submit an original transcript from your secondary school [Freshman applicants only]

Submit an original transcript from your post-secondary school or university [Transfer applicants only]. You must have your transcript reviewed by a credential evaluation center if your transcript is not in English, and does not have US semester credit hours. Please choose the "course-by-course" evaluation.

If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate English proficiency by providing evidence through one of the following methods:

Score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE), or the ELS Certificate of Completion (ELS level 112). Scores must be no more than two (2) years old. The minimum acceptable scores are as follows:

	i.	TOEFL: 500 on paper-based test, or 173 for computer-based test, or 61 iBT. NOTE: the University of Michigan Flint institution code is 1853.
	ii.	IELTS: 5.0
	iii.	MELAB: 69
	iv.	ECPE: Certificate of Proficiency
	v.	ELS: Certificate of Completion (ELS level 112)

b.	An official transcript showing one of the following:a degree earned at an accredited U.S. college or university OR adegree earned at a foreign institution where the primarily language of instruction was English OR successful completion (‘C’ or higher) of ENG 111 or ENG 112 or its equivalent.

c.	Proof that you are a native English speaker. This list contains countries commonly recognized as English speaking.
d.	UM-Flint English Language Program (ELP) - for students who need to improve their English. Click here for more information.

Submit an Affidavit of Financial Support [only students seeking an F-1 visa]. Residents of Ontario, Canada must use this affidavit form. The affidavit MUST be original. Documents such as original bank statements or loan certificates should be submitted together with the affidavit, proving the sponsor’s ability to provide money to cover living and educational expenses for the student's first year. If the applicant is currently or has recently attended a U.S. institution on an F-1 visa, s/he must still provide an affidavit and bank statement before beginning a new program.

For Graduate Students (with a Bachelors Degree seeking a Masters or Doctoral Degree):

Contact the Office of Graduate Programs to express your interest in applying, or with questions regarding the application process.

Choose the academic program for which you wish to apply. You may want to visit the University Catalog for specific program degree requirements and detailed course information.

Submit an application at least 6 months prior to the beginning of the term for which you wish to apply. You may apply online using the Graduate International Student Online Application, or a by using a paper application.

Submit an original transcript from your post-secondary school or university.

If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate English proficiency by providing evidence through one of the following methods:

Score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE). Scores must be no more than two (2) years old. The minimum acceptable scores are as follows:

	i.	TOEFL: 560 on paper-based test (minimum of 56 in each section) or 220 for computer-based test (minimum of 22 in each section) or 84 on the internet-based test - iBT (minimums of 23 in reading, 23 in listening, 15 in speaking, 21 in writing) NOTE: the University of Michigan Flint institution code is 1853.
	ii.	IELTS: 6.5
	iii.	MELAB: 80 (minimum of 80 in each section)
	iv.	ECPE: Certificate of Proficiency

b.	An official transcript showing one of the following: a degree earned at an accredited U.S. college or university OR a degree earned at a foreign institution where the primarily language of instruction was English OR successful completion (‘C’ or higher) of ENG 111 or ENG 112 or its equivalent.

Submit an Affidavit of Financial Support [only students seeking an F-1 visa]. This affidavit must be accompanied by either an original, currently dated bank statement; or an original, currently dated letter with a bank official's signature. The bank statement must show the required available funds as specified on the affidavit. The Affidavit of Financial support is valid for one year (or 6 months for students already in the U.S.). If the applicant is currently or recently attended a U.S. institution on an F-1 visa, s/he must still provide this affidavit since s/he is applying to begin a new program. The student's SEVIS record must also be transferred from the previous institution to the University of Michigan-Flint by the previous institution's DSO. Students in the U.S. on another type of visa do not have to provide the Affidavit of Financial Support unless they will be applying for F-1 status.

Pre-Arrival Checklist

As soon as you have been admitted to the University of Michigan – Flint and received your I-20 document, you will need to do the following:

	Read the Visa Information section of this website and follow its instructions. This will tell you how to pay the SEVIS fee and where you can get information on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country.
	If possible, look at the classes that will be offered and think about what type of schedule you would like to have. View schedule online. Remember international students must be full-time students.
	Start looking for housing. Click here for housing information.
	Make sure to bring all of your paperwork (I-20, SEVIS receipt, admission letter) when coming into the United States.
	The State of Michigan has four seasons. Please pack for both the hot and very cold seasons.
	Bring cash with you to put down on your apartment and/or for other living expenses.
	Let the International Student Center know when you will be traveling to Flint! Airport pickup is available, but only at the local Flint Bishop International Airport. Plan to arrive early in order to get housing and your academic schedule prepared.

Post-Arrival Checklist

Once you have arrived in Flint, you should do the following:

	Check in at the International Center!
	Call home to let your family and friends know you have made it to school safely.
	Attend the mandatory Orientation Meeting.
	Meet with an Academic Advisor in the Academic Advising Center.
	Register for Classes. (Remember you must be a full-time student in order to maintain your F-1 visa status).
	Make sure you get your UM Student ID Card. (This will also be done during Orientation).
	If applicable, you will need to get screened for tuberculosis (TB). This will be apart of the international student orientation. For more information about this please visit: http://www.uhs.umich.edu/tbscreen/.
	Find an on Campus job (if you want to work). If you need assistance finding a job please see the International Center. You can ask many departments about temporary positions, including Public Safety, Housekeeping, Office of Research and many others.
	Get a US Social Security Card. You will need this card if you plan working on campus. Please see the International Center before you apply for this card.
