Vintage Base Ball Roundtable

The Annual Vintage Base Ball Roundtable brings together representatives from the Vintage Base Ball community for a facilitated session to discuss issues facing players, historic site managers, sponsors and umpires engaged in presenting the historic game.

 The Vintage Base Ball Roundtable is held annually at the University of Michigan-Flint each year, and seeks to become a valuable annual discussion for stakeholders and a quality opportunity for everyone involved in vintage base ball to dialogue on issues addressing the activity.

 What can I expect at the roundtable?

We will begin the day with an informal welcome and then attendees will be treated to a presentation from a keynote speaker. Our speakers are picked for their interest in the vintage game as well as knowledge of the history of baseball. Following a catered lunch, guests will choose a moderated discussion group to talk over an issue facing the presentation and play of vintage base ball. After the meeting, we will collect all the discussion group notes and publish a report based on each group’s findings. Topics can include: scheduling challenges, liability issues, mission statements, historical accuracy.

This year's suggested topics:

  • Historical accuracy – rules
  • Historical accuracy – equipment/field/presentation
  • Club management issues (player recruitment/attendance/substitute players)
  • Scheduling
  • Bound rule vs fly rule
  • Umpires – training/educating audience/pre-1867 vs post 1867
  • Marketing and sponsorships

 Who can participate?

We urge anyone affiliated with the play, management, or presentation of vintage base ball to attend. If you are a club, we ask that you limit the number of guests to two members from your club. We especially encourage sponsors, and staff from historic sites who are associated with vintage clubs to attend as well.

 How can I contribute?

At the bottom of the registration page, there is a box where you can suggest a topic for discussion. If you have a recurring issue you feel would make a good discussion topic. Write a brief description of your topic in the box marked "Topic suggestions".
