Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) - Concentrations
The University of Michigan-Flint Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) program consists of two concentrations.
Liberal Studies (MLS) Concentrations
The long-standing concentration in American Culture approaches studies in our national character, institutions, and themes from multiple disciplinary perspectives. The program enables students to examine their own experience in a meaningful context of American ideas. It addresses four major audiences:
-
Teachers and others in educational institutions who seek professional improvement
-
Individuals in non-profit and governmental organizations who desire a stronger background in issues confronting our nation
-
Students who use the program as a stepping stone to more advanced graduate study
-
Those who seek enrichment through intellectual stimulation and greater breadth of academic experience
The newly-created Theatre and Community concentration is a vigorous program that combines applied and theoretical studies. It emphasizes the creation of a sense of community through the arts and including local communities (contexts) in that process. The program enables students to create new works in collaboration with other artists with an emphasis on devising theatre or exploring methods in creative dramatics. It addresses these major audiences:
- Teachers who wish to upgrade their skills and obtain a Master's degree that includes work in area theatres, schools, and other settings
- Teachers who are interested in improving their skills to qualify to work in school plays, or bring theatrical methods to the classroom
- Theatre artists, company managers, and community liaisons interested in augmenting their skills and acquiring additional theatre credentials
- Community leaders who seek to explore how drama can create community by exploring and performing local and regional narratives
