Education (MA) - Degree Requirements
The Master of Arts in Education program consists of 33-36 credit hours. A final grade point average of at least 5.0 (B) on a 9.0 scale is required for successful completion of the Master of Arts in Education.
A. Core Education Courses
Each student will be required to complete core education coursework. This coursework is designed to present contemporary issues in the social and psychological foundations of education with a focus that is particularly relevant to teachers in an urban community, and to provide support for the evaluation and execution of educational research.
B. Educational Concentration
The MA in Education degree offers students the opportunity to specialize in one of four areas of study:
Early Childhood Education
Literacy K-12
Special Education
Technology in Education
Each student will choose one of these concentrations and complete the designated requirements. Visit a concentration's page for its specific requirements.
C. Cognate Courses
Non-education cognate courses are required, and have been designed to support and enhance study in the concentration.
D.Thesis/NonThesis Option
Students in Literacy K-12, Early Childhood Education, and Technology in Education must select either the 36-credit-hour non-thesis option or the 33-credit-hour thesis option. Students selecting the non-thesis option take 6 elective credits; students selecting the thesis option will enroll in EDE 698 and subsequently develop a research project or thesis that is tailored to the area of concentration. Students in Special Education take 36 credit hours of planned graduate coursework and practicum.
