Listed below are some key areas that should be reviewed carefully in each section of the FAFSA.

Section 1:

  • Fill in general information about the student submitting the FAFSA. Please make sure that the Social Security Number is correct and belongs to the student named on the FAFSA.
  • Marital status cannot be updated after the FAFSA is initially filed.
  • List the enrollment status you expect to be in the Fall semester.  If this changes please do not change it on the FAFSA; instead please submit a revision request form to the Office of Financial Aid.
  • When indicating the type of aid you are interested in, please do not select "don't know."
  • Please do not leave the answer to the drug conviction question blank.

Section 2:

  • These questions are used to determine whether or not the student is considered dependent or independent (established by the U.S. Department of Education).
  • When answering questions regarding children/legal dependents. Please make certain that the amount of support they receive from the student filing the FAFSA is taken into consideration and can be documented if necessary.

Section 3:

  • Parent Financial Information is listed here. Please refer to a copy of your 2006 tax return. The question will list specific line numbers to look at based on what type of tax return you filed.  NOTE:  If you answered yes to any question in section 2 then this information does not need to be included.
  • All questions pertaining to net worth or current balances are as of the day the FAFSA is filed and are not to be updated.

Section 4:

  • Student Financial Information is listed here. Please refer to a copy of your 2006 tax return. The question will list specific line numbers to look at based on what type of tax return you filed.  NOTE:  If you worked, but were not required to file taxes you still need to list the wages earned.  Also, if any benefits such as FIA, SSI, or child support were received this is the area where they are reported.
  • All questions pertaining to net worth or current balances are as of the day the FAFSA is filed and are not to be updated.

Section 5:

  • List the school code and housing plan for that school.
  • The school code for UM-Flint is 002327.
