General Program in Studio Art (Bachelor of Fine Arts)
Program Requirements
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art endeavors to prepare students for innovative roles in the contemporary world of art. The program begins with a series of foundation courses that stress the traditional development of technical and intellectual skills. The growth and development of each student are accelerated through exposure to several media and conclude with the choice of an area specialization.Areas include ceramics, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking/drawing and sculpture.
Completion of 124 credit hours distributed as follows:
A. Completion of the general education requirements in English composition, natural sciences, social studies, humanities, fine arts, and two area options.
B. Art History (12-16 credits).
- Survey courses (6-8 credits). ART 111 and 112 (MCC) or equivalent.
- Courses beyond survey (6-8 credits). Selected from ART 116, 214, 215 (MCC); ART 308, 310, 311, 315, 331, 409, 410 (UM-F).
C. Studio Art (66 credits), not to include ART 120 (UM-F).
- Two-dimensional design (3 credits). ART 141 (MCC).
- Three-dimensional design (3 credits). ART 142 (MCC).
- Beginning drawing (6 credits). ART 131, 132 (MCC).
- Life drawing (3 credits). ART 135 (MCC) or ART 361 (UM-F).
- Computer Graphics. ART 145 (MCC) or ART 252 (UMF) (3 credits).
- 24 credits in one areas of specialization selected from: ceramics, graphic design, design/photography, painting, printmaking/drawing, sculpture. Specific courses in the selected specialization should be chosen in consultation with the art advisor.
- Nine credits above the 100 level in two-dimensional art chosen from areas outside the area of specialization.
- Nine credits of three-dimensional art chosen from areas outside the area of specialization.
- Additional elective courses to bring total credits in art to 63. At least 15 credits of studio art must be taken at the University of Michigan-Flint.
Ceramics
ART 281, 282, 283, 284, 295 (MCC); ART 381, 382, 396 (UM-F). ART 382, 396 (UM-F) may be repeated to total 12 credits each.
Painting
ART 261, 262, 263, 264, 295 (MCC); ART 360, 364, 365, 366, 395 (UM-F). ART 365, 395 (UM-F) may be repeated to total 12 credits each.
Printmaking/Drawing
ART 231, 235, 236, 237, 238, 295 (MCC); ART 301, 361, 362, 395 (UM-F). ART 301, 395 (UM-F) may be repeated to total 12 credits each.
Sculpture
ART 271, 272, 273, 274, 295 (MCC); ART 371, 396 (UM-F). ART 371, 396 (UM-F) may be repeated to total 12 credits each.
Graphic Design
ART 122, 145, 146, 242, 244, 245 (MCC); ART 140, 160, 252, 322, 324, 325, 326, 330, 342, 400, 401 (UM-F).
Photography

D. Additional elective courses to bring total credits to 124, at least 50 of which are outside the studio art area.
E. A minimum grade point average of 2.75 in studio art classes.
F. ART 399 (UM-F), Senior Seminar (3 credits).
G. Presentation of a senior exhibition. Passage or failure of this exhibition will be included in the senior seminar grade.
