INTRODUCTION

The College of Arts and Sciences' strategic planning process will both inform and build on the University's Strategic Planning efforts. Our early efforts in 2017 provided feedback and helped form UM-Flint's strategic planning priorities:

  • A Distinctive Identity that Builds Campus Pride
  • Excellent Education and Scholarship Across the Institution
  • A Student-Centered Culture Focused on Retention and Success
  • Recruitment through High-Quality Programs and Campus Life
  • A Vital Partnership with an Engaged Community 

Early CAS efforts included:

  • CAS Department Chairs, Associate Chairs, and Program Directors held initial discussions and provided framework for a College-wide survey;
  • distribution of the survey to all CAS faculty and staff, with results shared College-wide;
  • two open forums for all CAS faculty and staff to discuss survey results and provide feedback;
  • CAS leadership retreat (Council of Chairs and Executive Committee) to discuss alignment to University priorities and further deliberate CAS priorities.

Our work through the 2017-18 academic year will build on the College's established strategic planning foundation and the UM-Flint priorities as we clarify and further define our own areas of growth and focus. FEBRUARY 2017
  • February 10: CAS Leadership (Department Chairs, Associate Chairs, Program Directors) meets to form questions for CAS survey

The charge of the committee is as follows:

The CAS Strategic Planning Committee is advisory to the Dean.  The Committee is charged with coordinating the College’s strategic planning process, building upon work that has been done earlier in 2017. To make our planning process as inclusive and transparent as possible, the committee will connect, convene, and communicate with diverse constituencies and individuals to solicit and compile information that will be synthesized to generate 5-7 mid-level strategic priorities for the College.  Subsequently, “actionable” items will be generated, giving attention to defining a locus of responsibility, determining metrics for assessment, and identifying funding sources to pay for any new initiatives.  The Committee will also facilitate conversations regarding mission, vision, and value statements for the College.

The committee will be a relatively small and agile body, but one that is highly engaged, visible and accessible, and both representative of and sensitive to the breadth of the College.  The committee will be expected to review environmental scans or other relevant written reports as well as consider the use of focus groups, open forums, discussions at regularly scheduled department and college-wide meetings, and online feedback mechanisms to ensure broad and diverse input into the planning process.

Mid-level strategic priorities should be presented to and debated within the College in December 2017, while more detailed actionable items and mission, vision, and value statements should be presented to faculty no later than April 2018.
