Nursing
Assessment Summary for 2005-2006 for Bachelor of Science in Nursing:
The Department of Nursing, as part of professional accreditation processes and in the ongoing effort to maintain excellence of curriculum, conducts regular assessment of student learning and outcomes. Student performance is evaluated, formatively, course by course, and summatively, in the achievement of expected program outcome measures. The BSN program has 13 terminal objectives corresponding with standards set by The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (AACN, 1998). These have been broadly grouped into five areas including critical thinking, communication, cultural competence, nursing practice, and professionalism. Measures to assess student outcomes include standardized tests and instruments, select course assignments, student/alumni surveys, and employer surveys. First time pass rates on the NCLEX-RN exam are closely monitored as well as graduation and job placement rates. Results are analyzed and used by the Department of Nursing faculty in making curricular decisions with the goal of continual improvement.
Assessment Summary for 2005-2006 for Master of Science in Nursing:
The Graduate Nursing program has a comprehensive assessment plan in place that utilizes various types of direct and indirect measures from graduates, alumni, and employers. The program achieved 10-year accreditation from the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education in 2005. The Nursing Program Graduate Evaluation Committee regularly completes an analysis of all outcome measures and submits recommendations to the Nursing Graduate Program Committee. This has resulted in a high-quality MSN curriculum with high-quality MSN graduates. In response to national requirements, the MSN program will be changing to a Doctor of Nursing Practice program in 2009. Major faculty effort to plan and implement the DNP curriculum and outcome assessment plan is in progress.
