CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS OF STUDY

We, in the Department of Chemistry, are committed to providing an education which will prepare our graduates for entrance
into the leading graduate and professional programs and to be critical thinkers and problem solvers in their chosen fields.
Our program is characterized by close student-faculty contact made possible by small classes and faculty availability.
Students may choose to enhance their educational development through the Honors Program, through involvement in
faculty research, and through cooperative experiences which are available with several area employers.

The Department offers four concentration programs that lead to the Bachelor's degree. These programs are:
The General Program in Chemistry with Options in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Environmental Chemistry (Bachelor of Science),
the Honors Program in Chemistry (Bachelor of Science), the General Program in Chemistry (Bachelor of Arts), and the
Teacher's Certificate Program in Chemistry (Bachelor of Arts).  A Minor and a Teacher's Certificate Minor in Chemistry
are also available.

Besides fulfilling the College of Arts and Sciences general education requirements, all options have the same core requirements:
chemical principles with laboratory, organic chemistry with laboratory, analytical chemistry with laboratory, physical chemistry
with laboratory, laboratory safety, spectroscopy, junior/senior seminar, physics, computer science and calculus.

The Chemistry Option usually will lead to certification of the graduate by the American Chemical Society. The student takes additional
courses in mathematics/computer science, analytical chemistry with laboratory, synthesis laboratory, inorganic chemistry, advanced chemistry courses, and a research activity.

The Biochemistry Option also leads to certification by the American Chemical Society.  Students take fewer advanced chemistry courses, but are required to take additional advanced biology courses as well as biochemistry and its associated laboratories.

The Environmental Option also leads to certification by the American Chemical Society.  Students take courses in biology and
physical geography, environmental chemistry and toxicology, and analytical chemistry.

The Teacher Certificate Program (with two options) requires courses in education, and a minimum of thirty credits in chemistry,
chosen in consultation with the advisor, plus courses in mathematics and physics.

Students wishing to obtain a Minor in Chemistry Teacher's Certificate Minor will take chemical principles with laboratory and
organic chemistry with laboratory with additional courses in physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, or
biochemistry. In addition a minimum of eight credits of chemistry at the 200 level or above must be taken at UM-Flint.

Interested students should read the most recent edition of the UM-Flint catalog for specific requirements and course descriptions.
