Zelpha E. McKinnon Science Scholarship
Zelpha E. McKinnon, a philanthropist, was born in Alma, Michigan on April 16, 1897, and became a
Flint resident in 1918. She married Flint insurance businessman Leonard McKinnon, who died in 1983
at age 86. Mrs. McKinnon died in 1999 at the age of 101. She left her own imprint on the flint community
by making gifts to area colleges and numerous civic organizations. Her donations included funds for
construction of the UM-Flint Thompson Library and McKinnon Plaza, library acquisitions, and several
University scholarship funds. Mrs. McKinnon often recalled her husband's moto when asked about her
